She joined Google in 2018 as director of user-experience design and runs sign, a site dedicated to advancing inclusive design. From 2014 to 2017, Holmes served as principal director of inclusive design at Microsoft, where she led a team that developed the Microsoft Design Toolkit, which was inducted into the Smithsonian Institution’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. In her new book, Mismatch: How Inclusion Shapes Design, Kat Holmes explains how to design for excluded communities and why it’s important to do so. Yet a design that excludes a segment of consumers will fail to reach its full market potential. For example, some products aren’t user-friendly for left-handed people, those with disabilities or even different age groups. When creating a product or a system, designers often think about their target audience and overlook everyone else.
